NEW - CHANGE IN VISA REGULATIONS
VISA-ON-ARRIVAL (VOA) is now available at Yangon and Mandalay International Airports for nationals of more than 100 countries with which Myanmar has diplomatic ties. Previously, visas must be arranged in advance before arrival. A tourist VOA costs US$30 for a 28-day stay, business VOA US$40 for a 70-day stay, social VOA US$40 for a 28-day and a transit visa US$18 for 24-hour stay. Visitors must stay at government-approved accommodation establishments, with the exact address to be stated in the application form. Children under seven years of age travelling with the parents are exempted from visa fees. An individual traveller must show he has at least US$300 (or the equivalent in another currency) on hand to Immigration, as proof he can sustain himself during his visit; a family must take out a wad of US$600 to show the officer.

Mandalay was the former capital, prior to British rule, and the second largest city in the country, it takes its name from the nearby 240-metre Mandalay Hill, and is rich in monasteries and pagodas. The modern center of Buddhism and Myanmar arts, the old royal city of Mandalay, 670km north of Yangon, is also the home of traditional artisans - including wood and stone carvers, silversmiths and weavers - and for the production of gold leaf. Bagan is the main tourist attraction in Burma or Myanmar as it is officially called these days. One of the richest archaeological sites in Asia, at its height, in the early 11th century, Bagan was the world center of Theravada Buddhism, with more than 13,000 pagodas covering the plains bordered by two sides of the Ayeyarwady River . Covering an area of more than 40 sq. km, this is one of the world's richest archaeological sights, with no two of the red baked brick monuments the same. Yangon actually means in Burmese“ the end of strife”. The British annexed the city in 1851, changing its name to Rangoon. Refreshingly free of high rises until now, this pleasant mix of colonial buildings and tree shaded streets serves as a great introduction to the country. Covering an area of about 400 square kilometers with a population of 5 million.
